It's a curved, pale grey box, slightly smaller but a whole lot more appealing than the original Xbox. On the front is a chrome disc tray, an infrared port for an optional DVD remote, two memory card slots, an enormous power button and a cover hiding two USB ports. If you don't like the grey finish, Microsoft has promised a selection of different fascias: kit it out Atari 2600-style with a wood veneer finish or slap graffiti across the front – the choice is yours.
Edge magazine also reveals that at the heart of Xbox 360 growls a trio custom IBM PowerPC 3.2GHz cores. In other words, enough power to blow a crater beneath your telly. But for all the nitty-gritty spec-babble take a gander at the key features listed at the bottom of the story.
Every Xbox 360 machine will come fitted with a removable 20GB hard disk. The console supports Windows Media Player Extender, enabling you to store, catalogue and play back music, movies and pics on your goggle box. And as it's Wi-Fi ready, you can stream content wirelessly from a Wi-Fi-enabled Windows XP PC. |
As previously reported, 360's controllers will be wireless and are similar in size to the Xbox's S-controller. Running off rechargeable, removable batteries, controllers can be recharged by either plugging them into the machine's USB slots or into a custom dock which will be available separately. The black and white buttons from the old S-controller have been shifted to become two new shoulder buttons that sit above the analogue triggers.
Microsoft also stated that Final Fantasy XI will appear on 360, no doubt attempting to appeal to the Japanese market that pretty much overlooked the original Xbox. In addition 160 games are already in development for the console, with between 25-40 titles expected by the end of the year. While this news is exciting for anyone desperate for a slice of next-gen gaming, is it enough to give Xbox 360 the head-start it needs before PS3 hits next spring?
Games-wise, confirmed big name titles currently in development include Project Gotham Racing 3 and Need For Speed: Most Wanted.
