Alfa Romeo 147 1.9 JTD Multijet Lusso

Its adoption of higher injection pressures and multiple, but smaller, injections delivers even greater performance and fuel efficiency, together with reduced carbon dioxide emissions. range, this engine's power output has been extended still further, thanks to a modified injection strategy which also benefits noise and vibration levels.

Already available in the twin overhead cam, 16-valve unit, with variable geometry Garrett turbocharger, now delivers 150 bhp at 4000 rpm, while the remarkable maximum torque figure remains at 226 lb-ft at 2000 rpm.
The result is a smooth, reliable and quiet delivery of power, with low fuel consumption allied to responsive performance and flexibility.

The maximum torque figure is actually greater than that generated by the 250 bhp 3.2 litre petrol V6 of the 147 GTA, its flexibility is evident as 90% of its maximum torque is available between 1750 and 3250 rpm. The 0-60 mph acceleration time drops from 9.1 to 8.8 seconds, while combined cycle fuel consumption remains at a frugal 47.9 mpg.

In order to exploit the engine's greater output, revised sixth gear and final drive ratios have been introduced to provide refined and relaxed high speed cruising.

The proven and successful arrangement of double wishbones at the front and MacPherson at the rear continues with a series of revisions. Subtle changes to the damper characteristics, longer front shock absorber pistons housed in Teflon guides and suspension design have brought higher standards of ride comfort without any adverse effects on the car's renowned handling characteristics.

The result is a forgiving and drivable chassis that offers safety and control together with the precision and response assured under all conditions. The 147 offers high lateral grip, swift and sharp cornering, making it a real driver's car.

The steering system ensures safety and precision at high speed, good 'feel' characteristics at all speeds and low effort during parking manoeuvres and at low speed.

The steering gear has a substantial rack and links (diameters are 28 and 14 mm respectively) to prevent any flexing in the steering system and ensure a more precise response. All Alfa Romeo cars typically feature very direct steering: the Alfa 147 has 2.2 turns lock to lock, and the turning circle is 11.5 metres.

All models are equipped with anti-lock braking (ABS) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), while certain models are fitted with anti-slip regulation (ASR) and the engine torque control system known as Motor Schleppmoment Regelung (MSR).. Dynamic Control (VDC) stability system is standard on the top models and available as an option on others.

ASR optimises traction at any speed with the aid of the brakes and engine control. The system computes degree of slip on the basis of wheel rpm calculated by the ABS sensors, reducing engine torque when an excessive power demand causes both driven wheels to slip or alternatively, if only one wheel slips it is automatically braked without the driver touching the brake pedal. The resulting effect is similar to that of a self-locking differential.

MSR cuts in during abrupt downshifts under conditions of low grip, and restores torque to the engine to prevent wheelspin as a result of lock.

Alfa Romeo's electronic stability system, VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control), which intervenes to bring the car back under control when extreme conditions threaten stability. VDC permits roadholding while allowing the driver the full satisfaction of controlling the car, cutting in only when the situation reaches a critical condition.
